Leading with Spanish: A Bilingual Customer Service Representative Offers Advice

Sarah Minnich’s favorite part of her job at Delphax Technologies was speaking in Spanish with customers every day.

A University of Minnesota alumna who double majored in Spanish & Portuguese Studies and Business & Marketing Education, she joined the industrial high-resolution printer company shortly after graduation to work as a bilingual customer service representative. Sarah explains that 30 percent of her customers were Spanish-speaking, most of them from Mexico and Latin America.

Her advice is get to know the culture of the language you are learning. And while you can learn plenty about culture in the classroom, she stresses the importance of spending additional time outside the classroom reading, attending events, and meeting people. For instance, have you considered trying out dance or similar activities for a closer look at other cultures?

(She also advises asking questions on the job to show that you are serious about your new position, especially if it’s your first job—sounds right to us!)

Motivated by Sarah’s tenacity to learn the cultures of Spanish native speakers and her insight to apply that knowledge at her job? Wondering what career path Spanish skills might send you down?
