Manga Drawing Contest Announced: Enter to Win Free Online Japanese Tutoring with Verbling
Update: Thanks to all who participated! The competition deadline was August 7, 2017. The competition is now closed, and winners will be announced by August 21, 2017.
Lead with Languages and the Japan Foundation are teaming up with Verbling and VIZ Media to launch a manga drawing contest, Japanese with Manga.
Manga is the hugely popular Japanese form of comic known for great characters, rich stories, excellent artwork, and exciting, imaginative worlds. It’s also an awesome way to connect with Japanese culture and even learn the language.
While anybody can enjoy Manga, including in the English language, knowing Japanese gives you the tools to better understand the rich culture behind these works in all their wide-ranging diversity. What undiscovered manga lies out there? What are the characters saying in the original language? By diving into the culture and language of manga, you’ll find out!
To participate in the contest, all you have to do is post your drawing based on one of a selection of VIZ Media manga characters—click here to choose your favorite!
Drawings must be confined to one page and may contain a single bubble with one word in either English or Japanese. (Judges will not be taking your choice of language into account when making their selection: It’s totally up to you!) And hey you guys, make sure your content is suitable for All Ages!
So, whip out those pens and pencils and start drawing! A judging panel of Manga experts from VIZ Media is on standby to pick out some lucky winners. VIZ Media has been bringing the finest in manga, anime, and global entertainment to English-speaking fans across the world for over thirty years.
2 Grand Prize Winners will each receive $500 credit to be used for free language lessons with Verbling Japanese language tutors. This will provide you with about 6 to 9 months of weekly lessons, at a rate of one lesson per week. Verbling lessons center on real-life conversations with native teachers: One of the most effective ways to learn a language. And it’s super simple to get started: Just browse through teacher profiles to select the best tutor for you, book lessons that suit your unique schedule and goals, and login to get talking!
5 Runners Up will win a copy of Japanese the Manga Way: An Illustrated Guide to Grammar and Structure. This book is the “real manga, real Japanese” approach to learning Japanese and presents real-life, published manga paired with translations that makes learning Japanese fun and memorable. As an introduction, as a jump-start for struggling students, or as a reference and review for veterans, Japanese the Manga Way is perfect for all learners at all levels.
Simply post your drawing of no more than one 8.5”x 11” page featuring VIZ Media characters to Instagram, using #JapanesewithManga. Remember that the content of your drawing should be suitable for All Ages and, if you want, may contain up to one bubble with either an English or a Japanese word.
Editors from VIZ Media publications will act as the official judging panel to select contest winners.
Be sure to follow Lead with Languages on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to get updates on #JapanesewithManga. Lead with Languages will share, at their discretion, some of the most compelling submissions as they come in throughout the length of the contest.
The deadline to post and tag your drawing on Instagram is August 7, 2017. Winners will be announced on or before August 21, 2017.
One entry per student. Students must be enrolled in high school in the Fall of 2017. Proof of enrollment will be verified before awards are granted.
Images showing explicit material, more than one word in English or Japanese, or in excess of one 8.5” x 11” page will not be considered. To be considered, drawings must also contain VIZ Media characters.
