Foreign Flick Friday: Thai Language Short Documentary Celebrates Determination and Teamwork

Determination can overcome any obstacle. Or so the boys of the Thai village of Koh Panyee learn when they want to form a soccer league.

The problem, of course, is that Koh Panyee is a floating village built on stilts with no land to play on, as the village elders constantly remind them. Undeterred, the boys exemplify teamwork by building a pitch and practicing hard enough to enter a mainland tournament. Recognizing the boys’ determination, the villagers even pitch in to buy gear in an emotional moment.

The short documentary TMB Panyee FC, based on a true story from 1986, is an effort by TMB Bank’s “Make THE Difference” campaign to inspire people to start thinking differently about the little things that they can do to change the world, just as the boys did and continue to do today. In the company’s own words:

“Whatever challenges you face in life, if you think you can make a difference, we say you can.”

Recipient of a 2012 D&AD advertising award, the short is one of Creative Director Sanpathit Tavijaroen’s best and is used as an example of successful and emotional advertising in classrooms worldwide.
